Lagos made history October 4-5, 2025, as the city hosted Africa’s maiden E1 powerboat racing Lagos event. The E1 powerboat racing Lagos grand prix, presented by FirstBank, marked the first time the all-electric powerboat championship took place on the continent. 

Thousands of spectators lined the Lagos Lagoon waterfront and multiple viewing points including Official Fan Zones, hotel decks, and premium hospitality venues. The race turned into a festival of speed, culture and sustainability. Local music, brand activations and race simulators added to the electric atmosphere. 

Team Brazil by Claure Group rode to victory, with pilots Timmy Hansen and Ieva Millere-Hagin clinching top honours. They fended off strong performances from Team Blue Rising and Team Drogba Global Africa, who placed second and third respectively. 

Organisers briefly delayed some of the racing due to a tropical storm sweeping across the Lagos Lagoon, but the event resumed safely and delivered thrilling competition. 

Beyond the racing, the Lagos event underscored a commitment to environmental innovation. Zero-emission boats, mangrove restoration efforts, coastal clean-ups and local legacy programmes formed part of the schedule. Officials emphasised how Lagos showcasing E1 powerboat racing sends a message about sustainable development, clean energy and blue economy potential. 

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the E1 Lagos GP as proof of Lagos’s creativity, resilience and dedication to sustainable solutions. He noted that hosting the event enhanced the city’s global profile, while offering new economic, tourism and investment opportunities.
