No Regrets on Subsidy Removal, Tax Reforms to Continue — Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to implementing tax reforms despite opposition from northern lawmakers and governors.

Speaking in his first media chat aired on NTA, Tinubu described the reforms as essential to modernizing Nigeria’s tax system and addressing colonial-era inefficiencies.

The reforms, including four proposed tax bills, aim to expand the tax base and improve revenue generation.

However, northern governors and lawmakers have expressed concerns about economic marginalization and urged broader consultations, a call the President has rejected.

On subsidy removal, Tinubu maintained it was a necessary step to save Nigeria’s future, dismissing phased removal as impractical.

He emphasized the importance of resource management and boosting local production to tackle inflation.

Regarding recent stampedes at palliative distribution events, Tinubu blamed poor organization and stressed the need for discipline.

He also highlighted his administration’s anti-corruption efforts, including increased transparency, the elimination of fuel subsidies, and the introduction of a student loan program.

Tinubu dismissed calls to shrink his cabinet, stating all appointees are crucial to Nigeria’s governance. He also ruled out price controls, advocating for increased agricultural output to stabilize.
