Copyright Dispute: Brazilian Court Orders Adele’s Song Removed from Streaming Platforms

A court in Brazil has ruled that a song by British singer Adele must be removed from radio and streaming platforms worldwide due to an alleged copyright violation.

The decision was handed down by Judge Victor Torres after Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes accused Adele of plagiarizing a track from his 1995 album.

Geraes claims that Adele’s 2015 hit “Million Years Ago” was copied from his 1996 song “Mulheres,” performed by renowned Brazilian artist Martinho da Vila.

Geraes has filed a lawsuit seeking $160,000 in moral damages for lost royalties and is demanding to be credited as a co-writer of Adele’s song.

The court also warned the Brazilian branches of Sony and Universal Music Group of an $8,000 fine for each instance of non-compliance with the removal order.
