The state of Ondo is in mourning following the demise of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu at the age of 67. Akeredolu, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, breathed his last in the early hours of Wednesday, December 27, 2023, succumbing to a prolonged illness.
Governor Akeredolu had been battling health challenges for some time. His recent medical leave, initiated on December 13, aimed at addressing his lingering health issues. A statement released by his chief press secretary, Richard Olatunde, highlighted the governor’s unwavering commitment to prioritizing his health and achieving full recovery before resuming his official duties.
During Akeredolu’s absence, the deputy governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, assumed the responsibilities of the governor in an acting capacity, as outlined in the Nigerian Constitution..
Akeredolu’s health struggles had forced him to return from an extended medical leave abroad in September. Operating remotely from his residence in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state, raised concerns and tensions among his supporters and Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa. The strained relations even led to attempts to impeach the deputy governor, both preceding and following Akeredolu’s departure.
