Following the recent reports of rape across the country, many have taken to the pages of social media page to advise the legislative arm of Government to prescribe stringent rules and penalties against rapists who do not understand the principle of consent. While many have advised that life imprisonment be imposed on rapists, some others have advised that the punishment for rape ought to be castration.
The Osun State House of Assembly has however passed into law a bill sentencing rapists to life imprisonment while the House of Representatives, in its deliberations, has considered castration as too much of a punishment to give to rapists. Whether the House of Representatives subscribe to the punishment of castration or not, there should be strict laws that should ensure that potential rapists indeed think twice before committing the offence. Other states should, for a start, follow the steps of Osun State by imposing life imprisonment as a punishment for rapists.
