Atletico Madrid were beaten 3-0 by Espanyol on Saturday and will need one point at least with two games left to secure second place in the league.
Espanyol were surprising winners after a Diego Godin’s own-goal and two goals from Borja Iglesias.
Simeone said the first goal changed the game.
“The first goal changed the game, the second one made us worse,” he said.
“Espanyol were deserving winners. They were better and they had more chances,” he added.
Barcelona, who have already won the league, can move 12 points clear if they beat Celta Vigo.
Real Madrid face Villarreal on Sunday, and will need to win their remaining three games and hope Atletico Madrid lose their remaining games if they plan to overtake their city rivals.
Atletico loss may have given false hope but Madrid coming third is inevitable. Atletico didn’t help themselves as Godin slid the ball into his own net, and Juanfran conceded a late penalty.
