We are always excited about the opportunity to work with you, our partners, to make a difference in the lives of children. You have confirmed our belief, time after time, that ordinary people working together can make a big impact with little acts of kindness.
It’s that time of the year again that we invite you to join our #1000HelpingHands campaign to raise support for our school enrolment and back-to-school drive benefitting children in slums and poor communities. Every year, we support the education of children who are either enrolled in school for the first or assisted to go back to school. Our targets are primarily children who are not resident in our shelter but who nonetheless require our assistance to have access to education.
We have been inspired by the stories of beneficiaries in recent years that have been rescued from vices on the streets, children who have now embraced the possibilities and potentials that education provides.
With your donation, 150 children in Aboki Estate and Marwa slums in the Lekki neighbourhood were assisted to get back to school in 2017. They were provided with essential school needs: uniforms, school bags, books and writing materials. The Lagos Model School, Marwa which admitted the largest number of enrolled children was also supported through renovation of 3 classrooms, provision of new set of chairs, tables, whiteboards and teaching aids in three classes. We also paid the registration fee for all the children reintegrated into classes other than Nursery 1 and Primary 1.
We were able to scale up our care for resident children and those escaping trauma of abuse, embracing and exuding confidence in an atmosphere of love. We also recently launched a project called the Kids Innovation Hub with the aim of empowering 500 underrepresented children with coding skills by 2019 in our pilot phase. A total of 134 children are being trained currently at the Hub and we are delighted at the possibility of exceeding our initial target.
Your support is making a big difference here and we hope to do more working with you. This year, we are targeting 300 children in slums for our enrolment and back-to-school drive. We want to give both education and afterschool support. We cannot continue to share the statistics about Nigeria having the highest number of out-of-school children in the world. We would rather invite you to help us do something about it. Help spread the message within your social networks. Invite friends and family to give to the cause this year. Volunteer to assist with our community outreaches. Share your ideas of what we can do better or how you would like to be involved.
