Angelique Kerber has won her third grand slam title after beating Serena Williams 6-3 6-3 for her first Wimbledon title.
Williams was the overwhelming favourite and her story of coming back 10 months after complications with childbirth has captured the imaginations of many around the world. amongst those there to support her was the Duchesses of Sussex and Cambridge Box and Tiger Woods, Lewis Hamilton and Anna Wintour, as she assumes her role as Tennis’ most famous mother.
It wasn’t meant to be though as it took a little over an hour for the 30 years-old Kerber to see the 23 grand slam winner off. Kerber proved the better player on the day and showed her improvement since the last time they met at this stage – the 2016 Wimbledon final which serena won.
The win makes Kerber the first German Wimbledon Champion since Steffi Graf in 1996.
Serena was playing in her first slam final since the 2017 Australian Open, which she won while two months pregnant. But from the start, it looked like a hard chore to get past Kerber who was at the top of her game. Serena tried to rally back after losing th. e first set, but Kerber never gave much away and proved once more why she is regarded as one of the best counter-punchers in the gam
Against Goerges, Serena was superb and controlled the game throughout, but that wasn’t the case against Kerber who made Serena struggle with her strokes throughout.
