Taiwanese Head To The Polls Today To Elect A New President

Taiwan heads to the polls today for a presidential election which might see the island country produce its first female president.

Tsai Ing-wen is the leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and is seen as the voters favorite in an election where the key issue has been Taiwan’s relations with China.

Taiwan has not declared its independence since it split from China in 1949 even as China still lays claim to the Island and says it can retake the island by force.

Taiwan’s relations with China has considerably thawed over the years, a position unfavorable to most Taiwanese.
