Voters go to the poll today in Burundi with an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty as President Pierre Nkurunziza stands for elections for a third term unopposed. This is despite the fact that he’s only constitutionally allowed two terms.
His challenger Agathon Rwasa’s party is not recognized by the government, making the elections a little more than a formality.
Gunfire and explosions marred the peace as polls opened in Bujumbura even as the government says that voters will not be intimidated.
