‘I haven’t talked to Mikel in five years’ – Father
Super Eagle’s captain, Mikel Obi’s father has said he hasn’t spoken on the phone to his son in five years.
The 74 years old revealed this in the aftermath of his abduction during the recently concluded World Cup. The transporter was abducted while he was travelling along the Makurdi-Enugu expressway in June.
He kidnapped also coincided with Nigeria’s important last group game against Argentina, which his son played in despite the knowledge of his father being kidnapped for the second time.
Mikel’s father believes his son was only able to play because of the sour relationship they have.
“My relationship with Mikel is an issue, but we don’t know what to do.” he said.
“It’s over five years now without a phone call from him to me. But he communicates with his mother.
“There is nothing I have not done to fix it. God has told me that I should not feel hurt. When we start to talk about it, I say, ‘Well, as long as I see him on TV, doing great, no problem.”
After the World Cup, Mikel revealed he had to put aside the trauma of the whole situation to play the game against Argentina.
“I played while my father was in the hands of bandits.
“I had to suppress the trauma. I took a call for hours before the kick-off to tell me what had happened.”
