In an election of many firts for Saudi Arabia, the country has elected her fitst female politician.
Yesterday’s municipal election was the first election in Saudi Arabia in which women could vote and stand as candidates in a conservative country which places heavy restriction on women.
Yesterday’s elections will be recorded as a milestone in a country which does not allow women to drive.
Salma bint Hizab al-Oteibi won a seat in Mecca province in Saturday’s vote to officially become Saudi Arabia’s first female elected politician.
Other women have won in two other provinces in Saudi results as more results come in.
There will undoubtedly be attempts to abolish restrictions on women campaigning for themselves. Women are required to either speak from behind a partition or have a man speak for them.
