The U.S secretary of state, John Kerry is in Nigeria today to hold a meeting with the two frontline candidates for the February 2015 elections.
He tweeted at 2:27 p.m, “Just landed in Lagos on first and very impt trip to #Nigeria.”
State department officials revealed that he is meeting both candidates in a bid to discourage the kind of electoral violence which claimed lives and property following the release of the 2011 election results.
This is the first visit from a high ranking American official since 2012 following America’s open criticism of Nigeria’s federal government’s handling of corruption and the insurgency in Northern Nigeria.
