The Lifetime biopic for Aaliyah, titled The Princess Of R&B, debuted over the weekend. But, didn’t get very good feedback from longtime collaborator Timbaland.
The famed music producer took to social media on Saturday night to express his disapproval of Lifetime’s Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, which premiered on Saturday.
During his rant on Instagram, Timbaland posted video commentary and numerous memes, such as “Lifetime Disrespects Aaliyah” and “I think everyone [sic] musician portrayed in this Aaliyah movie should sue the hell out Lifetime movie for failure of accurate casting.”
“Everybody keeps telling me stop blaming Lifetime but blame Wendy and I’m like well…” Timbaland said in the interview. “I didn’t follow the story, so I have to believe the fans. It’s just hard for me to believe.”
He revealed that he never realized it wasn’t just a rumor. “I want to know the full details before going in. I always thought it was a rumor… I thought it was a joke. Evidently it wasn’t,” Timbaland said.
The controversy began between fans and producers of Lifetime’s film before it even aired.
“I’m very upset about it,” Timbaland said. “Fans kept sending me great pictures and posts. I got like 100 every hour. My Instagram turned into all [Aaliyah], but I said that she is all worth what it is. It brought me tears… how they supported her after her death.”
