As the Nigerian Army continues its massive onslaught in North Eastern Nigeria, the town of Baga was reportedly secured yesterday.
Before now, Baga, a fishing community in Borno state was controlled by the militant group Boko Haram. The Director of defense information, Maj. General Chris Olukolade confirmed the news yesterday in a statement he issued; “ heavy bombardment by Nigerian Air force” has compelled the terrorists to flee the town and all other settlements en route a relatively larger town just before the lake Chad.
“A comprehensive cordon-and-search phase of military operation has now commenced to enable troops mop up arms and ammunition and also apprehend any terrorist who might be hiding in the vicinity”.
There were also reports that a number of Boko haram fighters were drowned in Lake Chad as they attempted to flee.
The Army is also carrying out operations in 15 areas where the terrorists hold with air strikes and group troops making significant headway.
