The South African Supreme Court has returned a “guilty” verdict for South African athlete, Oscar Pistotius.
Oscar Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp in February 2013. He claimed he didn’t know she was in the bathroom when he fired four shots through the locked bathroom door.
He was initially only found guilty of culpable homicide but the decision was appealed at the Supreme Court where Justice Eric Leach ruled that Pistorius was indeed guilty of murder.
The judge’s ruling was based on the fact that Pistorius should have foreseen that whoever was behind the door would have been killed.
“All the shots fired through the door would almost inevitably have struck the person behind it. There would be effectively no place to hide,” Judge Leach said as he called Pistorius’s testimony “unconvincing and contradictory”.
Pistorius was released to house arrest in October after he was sentenced to five years for culpable homicide but now faces a possible 15 year sentence.
