Rumors continue to make the rounds today as to the intention of the President to remove the INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega. President Goodluck Jonathan said in his Presidential media chat three weeks ago that there was no plan to relieve Jega of his position.
Nevertheless, all the signs point to the contrary even as reports say that the President is compiling a list of possible replacements for Jega.
Speculation remains rife that Jega would be asked to proceed on terminal leave in the coming week. Debates continue as to whether the constitution of Nigeria empowers the President to remove a sitting INEC chairman without the approval of the Senate.
Seeing as the INEC Chairman is not a public servant, can he receive a directive from the President to go on terminal leave?
Having removed Professor Maurice Iwu in much the same manner without raising any eyebrows. However, it remains to be seen if, so close to the actual elections, President Goodluck Jonathan will make such an unpopular move.
