Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has announced his decision to run for a third term in 2017.
His announcement doesn’t come as a surprise after parliament passed a law removing tenure limits and an overwhelming referendum backing the constitutional amendment.
98.4 percent of voters voted “yes” in the referendum to abolisj tenure limit for the Presidency.
It was always just going to be a matter of time for Kagame to announce his intentions to run again in 2017.
His decision was announced during his new year address today.
“You have asked me to lead the country after 2017. Given the importance you ascribe to this matter, I can only accept,” Kagame said
58 year old Kagame will run for another 7 year term in 2017 and the new laws will allow serve additional two five years terms through to 2034.
