A recent video my the Islamic state militants purportedly showing the beheading of journalist Kenji Goto has sparked outrage and disbelief in the international community.
The video of the execution comes after several efforts by the Japanese government to negotiate the release of Kenji Goto by exchanging him for a Jordanian held prisoner. The Islamic state militant group had earlier threatened to execute Kenji Goto by Thursday if the exchange didn’t happen by then.
Although Jordan had expressed a willingness to release the prisoner, they maintained they needed to see the Jordanian hostage, pilot, First Lt. Muath al-Kasasbeh alive.
The Japanese Prime minister, Shinzo Abe immediately called an emergency meeting of his cabinet. He said early this morning; “I feel strong anger at this act of terrorism, which is outrageous and the height of barbarism,”
“We will not forgive terrorists, and we will work alongside the international community to make them pay for their sins.”
Although the video is still being analysed, it is largely believed to be authentic.
Jordan also followed suit in their condemnation of the beheading of the Japanese journalist and have reiterated their commitment to the release of its pilot.
