In what is fast becoming a norm, an estimated 40 migrants have drowned in yet another audacious bid to cross from Libya to Italy.
The Italian coast guard has managed eight rescue operations today as more people use the North African route to escape biting poverty to head for what they perceive to be greener pastures. Most of the migrants are believed to be from the Sub-Sahara sub region with an estimated 60,000 people having attempted to cross this year.
Just last month, a number of migrants also died trying to cross to Libya with the aid of dinghies.
