Mariah Carey’s 1994 carol, All I Want for Christmas Is You has become the highest charting Christmas song in 60 years after rising to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.
It is currently the highest charting song of the season on the hot 100 since “The Chipmunk Song,” by David Seville and The Chipmunks, which remains the only such single to have hit No. 1, for four weeks beginning Dec. 22, 1958 (just after the chart’s inception that Aug. 4).
Careys song first hit the top 10 last week after reaching No. 9 on the charts and later rising to No. 7.
It has now surpassed songs by Kenny G and New Kids on the Block and only trails “The Chipmunk Song” as the highest-charting such hit in the Hot 100’s 60-year history.
