The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, today appeared before the Senate to answer questions on INEC’s preparedness for the General elections slated for March 28 and April 11 2015.
He is also expected to answer questions on the use of the much contested Card readers which INEC intends to use for the elections. Before now, a couple of politicians had kicked against the use of card readers for the elections.
In his appearance before the Senate today, he defended the postponement of the election and allayed fears that the postponement was politically motivated.
“We believe that the period of extensions has offered us an opportunity to further perfect the electoral process for the delivery of free, fair credible elections to the satisfaction of the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians,ā Jega said.
He demonstrated to the Senate how the card readers work and also said that; āThe use of the Permanent Votersā Cards [PVC] and the Card Reader [CR] for the 2015 general elections we believe are in accord with the Electoral Acts 2010 as amended.
āThe use of the Card Reader for the purpose of accreditation of voters is one of the innovations introduced by the commission to improve the credibility of the process, in particular the accreditation process.
āIt adds value to the desire of Nigerians to have credible elections in line with international best practice.
