The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released its figures from the voters registration exercise as well as the PVC distribution exercise.
Although many people have criticized INEC for the shoddy manner in which the registration was handled, the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega said yesterday that there were issues of multiple registration. An estimated four million people were involved in multiple registration; however the names of the people who were involved in multiple registrations was said to have been deleted from the INEC database.
On the number of people registered; he had this to say; ” “In line with the provisions of the law, the commission has just announced the publication of the register of voters that will be used for the February 2015 general elections. The total number of voters registered for the elections is 68,833,476.”
He went on to say that 38,774,391 Nigerians have collected their Permanent Voter Cards out of the 54,341,610.
He also added that the commission intends to make sure that voters only use the permanent voters card for the election; “For the avoidance of doubt, possession of PVCs is a strict condition for anyone intending to vote in the 2015 elections.” He said.
The House of Representatives however, has appealed to INEC to allow voters with temporary voters cards to vote in the elections. The House of Representatives argued that it was very unlikely that INEC would distribute all the PVC’s in its possession before the election.
