A 23-year old Muslim woman of Pakistani and Moroccan heritage has appeared in H&M’s video promoting its recycling initiative.
Mariah Idrissi, who is based in London, appears in the high street brand’s video wearing a checkered hijab and sunglasses to to promote its Close the Loop recycling initiative.
‘It always feels like women who wear hijab are ignored when it comes to fashion… so it’s amazing that a brand that is big has recognised the way we wear hijab.’ – Mariah
Idrissi appears to be setting a precedent for diversity in fashion as she appears as one of the several characters in H &M’s short film, Close the Loop, that also includes an amputee model, plus-sized models, a Gulf sheik and a group of Sikh men on the campaign.
According to Fusion, Mariah says she went to the H&M shoot excited and with the consent of her mother, an accountant, and her father. “[H&M] asked how much in terms of neck I could show, but to be honest they were very respectful.” The camera team made accommodations for her, providing a private dressing area and limiting male interaction. “If the cameramen noticed something not quite right, they would call a woman over to fix me, it was sweet.”
She currently runs a Moroccan-inspired beauty salon in London, where she offers henna tattoos and special Halal nail polish.
