Google co-founder Larry Page announced a massive re-branding of the company, instituting Sundar Pichai as CEO and shifting himself and co-founder Sergey Brin to a larger holding company called Alphabet.
As CEO and President of Alphabet, Page and Brin will oversee Google as well as affiliated companies like the life-extension project Calico and a drone delivery venture called Wing. Alphabet will also direct Google’s early-stage funding operations, dubbed Capital and Ventures. Under the new organization, each of those operations will have its own CEO and leadership, while Pichai and Google retain control of search, ads, maps, the Google Play Store, YouTube, and Android.
In the announcement blog post, there’s also a new placeholder site, abc.xyz — alphabet.com is owned by someone else.
Not every letter has a company (yet), nor do we know where all of Google / Alphabet’s pieces will fall (e.g. Google Auto). So without further ado, here are the companies that make up Alphabet’s, erm, alphabet:
- Alphabet (the main company)
- B
- Calico (focused on longevity)
- Capital (investment)
- D
- E
- Fiber
- Google (now led by Sundar Pichai and includes search, ads, maps, apps, YouTube, and Android)
- Hooli
- I
- J
- K
- Life Sciences (“that works on the glucose-sensing contact lens”)
- M
- Nest
- O
- P
- Q
- R
- S
- T
- U
- Ventures (investment)
- W
- X lab (“which incubates new efforts like Wing, our drone delivery effort”)
- Y
- Z
