Gbenga Daniel Retires From Partisan Politics
Former Governor of Ogun State and director-general of the Atiku Abubakar’s campaign organisation, Gbenga Daniel has retired from partisan politics, according to a letter he sent to the PDP leadership.
In the letter, he gave his reason as “personal”
“This is to inform you of my intention to resign from active and partisan politics with effect from today, the 14th day of March 2019,” the letter reads.
“My decision in this regard is entirely personal to me.”
He said the decision will allow him devote more time to charity, especially his non-partisan political leadership academy.
He also touched on his decision to support the candidate of the All Progressive Congress in the last governorship election in Ogun State, instead of that of his party, PDP.
“Whereas the national leadership of our party, recognized one candidate for the 2019 election, by court pronouncements another candidate, and in compliance with those court orders, which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognised was on the INEC list,” Daniel said.
“The candidates recognized by INEC were not acceptable to the national leadership of the party. Our situation was then compounded because the candidate which the court and INEC recognised and accepted as valid has also been expelled by the party.”
He said that was why he supported the candidacy he believed better serves the interest of the state.
The candidate he supported, Dapo Abiodun won the election defeating APM’s Adekunle Akinlade, who ironically was supported by current Ogun state Governor Ibikunle Amosun who is a member of the APC, and Buruji Kashamu, the candidate of the PDP.
