Female Genital mutilation has been banned in Gambia today as the nation takes a progressive step in ensuring that barbaric practices which endanger women no longer have a place.
Female genital mutilation is the act of removing parts of a woman’s vagina in a belief that it will curb sexual awareness.
However, genital mutilation leads to serious medical complications such as bleeding, infections and even death.
Gambia’s President, Yahya Jammeh said that the practice is not in consonance with Islam and the ban will be effective immediately.
