In no alphabetical order, we remember celebrities, icons, veterans and notables who died in 2012. May their souls REST IN PEACE.

Whitney Houston, 48-year-old singer and multi Grammy-winning artist ironically died on the eve of the musical award show that had meant so much to her over the years. Her unexpected death caused an avalanche of tributes in the press and social media from friends, family, co-workers and fans. She died on February 11th, 2012

Etta James (73) died on January 20, 2012. Two weeks after the “At Last” singer’s doctor announced she was terminally ill, the 73-year-old jazz and R&B legend passed away in a Riverside, California, hospital due to complications from leukaemia. She is survived by her husband, Artis Mills, and sons Donto and Sametto, both musicians.

Ms. Remi Osholake also known as Remi Lagos (51) in the fashion industry passed on at the Harley Street Clinic in London. She had been earlier diagnosed with uterine cancer. She died in the hospital on November 3rd, 2012.

Joseph Murray (93) died on November 26, 2012. He was an american doctor and Nobel laureate (1990), performed first kidney transplantation died after having a hemorrhagic stroke.

Neil Armstrong (82) died on August 25, 2012. Neil Armstrong made the “giant leap for mankind” as the first human to set foot on the moon.

Nollywood actor Pete Eneh died on November 14, 2012 at Park Lane Hospital in Enugu after a long battle of an undisclosed sickness.

Sherman Hemsley, the bantamweight comic actor who portrayed the scrappy, nouveau riche George Jefferson on the hit CBS sitcom “The Jeffersons,” died on July 24, 2012 at his home in El Paso. He was 74.

Sally Ride, a physicist who became the first American woman to fly in space, died on July 23, 2012 at her home in San Diego. She was 61.

Rodney G. King, whose 1991 videotaped beating by the Los Angeles police became a symbol of the nation’s continuing racial tensions and subsequently led to a week of deadly race riots after the officers were acquitted, was found dead in a swimming pool at the home he shared with his fiancée in Rialto, Calif. on July 17. He was 47.

Hal Jackson was a veteran broadcaster who broke down racial barriers, becoming one of the first black disc jockeys to reach a large white audience and an omnipresent voice on New York City radio for more than 50 years. He died in Manhattan on May 23. He was 96.

Veteran Nollywood actor Enebeli Elebuwa , died on December 5th, 2012 in an Indian hospital following months of battling stroke.

Donna Summer, the Grammy-winning singer who helped define the disco era with such hits as “Hot Stuff” and “Bad Girls” died on May 17 after reportedly battling cancer. She was 63.

Ferdinand A. Porsche designed the original Porsche 911, the snazzy, powerful sports car that became the lasting signature of the German automobile company founded by his grandfather and later run by his father. He died in Salzburg, Austria, on April 5. He was 76.

Pa Akin Ogungbe passed away on November 29th, 2012. He was a popular Ogun State-based actor and director, Segun Ogungbe said the veteran actor died at the age of 78. His hit flick includes: D. O. Fagunwa’s popular epic movie, ‘Ireke Onibudo’.

Lam Adesina, former Governor of Oyo State, died on November 11, 2012. He was buried on the same day according to Islamic rites. Mr. Adesina died in his residence house in the Felele area of Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital. The former governor, 73, had been sick for a while and was admitted to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State. He was reportedly later transferred to St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos where he was admitted for some weeks, but later discharged.

Amadi Ogbonna , the Entertainment Editor of Vanguard Newspaper was reported dead on Wednesday August 29th, 2012. He died at a hospital in Apapa. He was said to have caught a cold at his office in Apapa and was rushed to the company’s clinic where he gave up the ghost in what was diagonized as an asthma attack. He had been a veteran entertainment journalist for over two decades.

Dr. Olusola Saraki was a consummate politician and Senator of the Nigerian Second Republic from 1979-1983. He was also the Waziri of the Ilorin Emirate. He died on Wednesday November 14th, 2012.

Zig Ziglar Motivational speaker and author died on Wednesday November 28th, 2012 in Dallas “after a short bout with pneumonia,” his spokesman said. He was 86.
