England has qualified for the quarter final of the World-cup after beating Columbia 4-3 in penalties. This is the first time in eight years that England will win a game at the knock-out stages of the World cup and the first time they would come out tops in a penalty shootout having lost all the three before that.
But it was anything but easy for the three Lions. They took the lead almost mid-way through the second half when Sanchez was judged to have brought Kane down in the penalty area. Rancour ensued as the Colombians agitated and complained about the decision, but the referee was unmoved.
Kane stepped up and coolly slloted it home past Arsenal’s David Ospina to give England the lead.
When it looked as if the game was headed for an English win, Colombia rose from the dead at the last minute of added time when defender Yerry Minna rose all of 8 feet to nod in the equalizer, England were stunned and for the first half of extra-time even looked mentally tired.
They played better in the second period of extra-time, but still couldn’t find a goal.
And some it went to extra-time, and there was an ominous feeling that it being England, there was going to be heartbreak.
But these set of England, having not been part of any of the six dissapiontment leading up to these moment thought differently.
Dier, Trippier, Rashford and Kane all scored to save Henderson, whose shot was brilliantly saved by Ospina a career of ignomity.
England will face Sweden in the Quarter Final.
