The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has pledged to ensure that the police officer serving with the Special Investigation Branch (SIB), Nasarawa Command is charged for allegedly raping and impregnating his 15-year-old niece and aiding the termination of the five-month-old pregnancy.
Chairperson of FIDA in the state, Mrs. Rabiatu Addra, announced while addressing journalists yesterday in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
She said that on receipt of the report by the whistleblower, FIDA in conjunction with the Sexual and Gender Based Violence Response (SGBV) team, facilitated and mobilized the police, which led to the arrest of the suspect.
The Chairperson explained that a whistleblower (Citizen’s Center For Justice) reported to them that the victim was repeatedly raped by her uncle she was living with after the death of her father.
“When we got to the residence of the victim in company of the Police we met her in discomfort.
“We hurried her to the hospital and the doctor confirmed that an attempt was made on her to abort the five-month-old pregnancy and the baby had died three days before we got there.
“Attempts by the medical personnel to evacuate the dead baby failed because it was already decaying and the victim was oozing terrible odors.
“The doctor also confirmed that the lady was also in sepsis, so they had to incite her and thankfully the dead baby came out.
“We made sure experts from Abuja were invited and carried out the DNA test because the girl affirmed it was her uncle that impregnate her.
“Our team with the assistance of the Ministry of Justice paid for her treatment and the DNA cost.
“The DNA test as part of the ongoing investigation is to verify the real culprit.”
She said that the patient has been discharged from the hospital and is now safe and has been reunited with her family.
She pledged that the group would not stop until justice is administered and appealed to the police to ensure a thorough investigation of the matter.
