South African intersex athlete, Caster Semenya with the ruling in her favour will no longer be required to take medications to reduce her testosterone levels to compete in female races according to an earlier ruling.
The initial ruling was that female athletes such as Semenya must take testosterone suppressants like the contraceptive pill to stay under the permitted level to continue competing as a woman in any running event between the 400m and the mile. However Caster made an appeal strongly believing that her gender differences should not get in the way of her right to compete under normal circumstances.
Following her successful appeal in front of the Swiss Supreme Court, Semenya said: ‘I am thankful to the Swiss judges for this decision. ‘I hope that following my appeal I will once again be able to run free.’
