Earlier this morning, Nigerians woke up to the sad news that a section of the popular Balogun market caught fire. But almost 10 hours after the incidence, the fire is yet to be put out.
Located on the Island, with thousands of people buying and selling, the market is considered one of the biggest and busiest in Lagos state. Â Unfortunately, properties and goods worth millions of naira have been destroyed in the inferno.
A business woman @pearlscollection_ng on Instagram, who also sells in the market, said that the building of a popular lace seller in the market caught fire. Sadly, she just offloaded 4 feet carton of laces the previous week.
Another seller in the market identified as Tola Brown said that she lost her goods in the inferno.

While the cause of the fire is yet to be known, the news of the unfortunate incidence was broadcast on popular micro-blogging platform, Twitter, as the video circulated the internet.
The videos showed bystanders looking helplessly as the fire raged on.

According to @pearlscollection_ng, even though fire fighters arrived the market to quench the fire, they abandoned the scene when they could not overcome the raging fire.

An opportunity to steal
According to some online reports, some thugs used the opportunity of the confusion in the market to steal from traders.

The fire, which was said to have started in a building at 43 Martins street is still raging. @pearlscollection_ng said the fire is now three plazas away from where her store is. While praying that the fire does not get to her, the devastated woman said that she would not leave the market until the fire stops.
