South African singer and rapper; Maya Christinah Xichavo Wegerif, also known as Sho Madjozi was born on the 9th of May, 1992 to a white father and black Tsonga mother. She spent her childhood in Tanzania and later proceeded to South Hadley, Massachusetts, United States to study African Studies and Creative Writing at Mount Holyoke College.
Upon her arrival in South Africa after her degree, the poet did a fellowship on writing at the University of Johannesburg. At the beginning of her music career, Sho Madjozi was a spoken word artist under the stage mane- MayaThePoet. Shortly after her arrival from the United States, she began rapping. Her shot to stardom arrived when she sang her hit single; Huku, which brought her into the limelight. Her name- Sho Madjozi was inspired by Vivian Majozi, a fictional character on a long-running local soap. In 2018, she released her debut album; Limpopo champions League in December, which featured other stars such as Nigerian artiste; YCEE and Kwesta. In the same year, she also gained more prominence with her performance of the “Wakanda Forever” together with YCEE at the Global Citizen’s Festival held in Johannesburg, in December.
As a multi-talented artiste, Sho Madjozi also featured in the telenovela; Isithembiso. She was also featured in the Nike Global Campaign for International Airmax day called; Kiss My Airs! Recently she was named the Newcomer of the year and Female Artist of the Year at the 25th Annual South African Music Awards held in Suncity, North West. Last year. she was announced as a brand ambassador for Race Mobile. Being selected as one of the few acts to perform at the Global Citizens Festival held in South Africa, the singer and poet wowed the audience with her performance of the single; DumiHiPhone, in collaboration with Okmalumkoolkat. Some of her hit singles include; Huku, Wakanda Forever, Don’t tell me what to do, Kona, and DumiHiPhone.
In May 2019, she was nominated as the Best New International Act at the BET AWARDS which is scheduled to hold on the 24th of June, 2019. Voting for all categories has commenced around the world.
