Algerian President, Abdelaziz Bouteflika has resigned his post as president after 20 years, according to state television.
Bouteflika informed the Constitutional Council of his decision which takes effect on Tuesday.
This move comes after armed forces chief Ahmed Gaid Salah demanded the immediate launch of impeachment proceedings against Bouteflika.
The 82-year-old came under increasing pleasure to resign after his decision to seek a fifth term in office despite suffering a stroke in 2013.
Bouteflika called off his bid for a fifth term, but protesters wanted him gone, and took to the streets to demand for his resignation.
On Monday, his office said he would resign before the expiration of his current mandate on April 28.
