This album, Lasso of Truth is the second effort coming from Omawumi coming 4 years after Wonder Woman which was her debut album. It is themed after the whip used by Wonder Woman, the famous DC Comic character.
Omawumi Megbele is no stranger to the Nigerian music scene since her performance at the 1st West African Idol reality show and if this Lasso of Truth Album is anything to go by, then it is safe to say that we have another female legend in the making.
I do not think there is much to be said about the first track – If you ask me- that has not been said as it is already a popular song treating the issue of incestuous relationship. Produced by Cobhams Asuquo, the song has a message which makes it safe for one to assume that the song won’t be fading from our memory for a while. The second track of the album “When the boss is coming” is a funk techno-beat styled song and is sure to become a choreographers’ delight.

Produced by Sizzle Pro (and where is this wonderful dude from?), the song plays on the Nigerian idea of terming movie villains as “boss” whilst the good guy is called “actor”. The song preaches perseverance as key to surviving life’s challenges. Omawumi goes patriotic in “African way”, a good dance song produced by the irrepressible Don Jazzy whilst “The Best You can be”, my personal favourite in the album is a soft rock song from an adult who now understands the value of the trainings received from her disciplinarian of a mother. It features Umar of Threadstone Rox group on the guitar and it’s a song that’d definitely get you in a reflective mood.
Reggae takes the centre stage in “I go go”, showing that she is not lacking in versatility and creativity and “What a bang bang” featuring Tuface is the first collabo in the album takes a swipe at the political class.
With creatively crafted rhymes she addresses the many sins of the political class to the sufferings laced with a subtle reminder of the fact that justice is lurking by the corner whilst exuding positivity that the country will get better. Tuface delivers his line with the gusto and smoothness he is known for which makes the track a great tune. “Personal race” which features Timaya is another good collaboration effort.

Timaya’s voice in the chorus was really cool and Omawumi did bring in her strong vocals to bear in the song with a message as reflected in the title. In “You must love me” is a lover’s call to a soul mate expressing real love in a soft tone down from the heavy beat of the previous track. She picks up the tempo in “Warn Yourself” which features Starboy/EME’s Wizkid in a playful mien. I would have loved to hear Wizkid do more than repeat lines from a previous song in the track but nevertheless it didn’t take away from the fact that it is a good track and Sarz did do a good job on the beat. She admonishes all to take things easy in Stay Alive (Jeje laye) and I honestly don’t have anything to say about “Belle ft Flavour” other than “you’ve all heard it before, so what do you think?”
Starting with an opera feel, “Life goes on featuring Afay” is another good collaboration expressing the regrets of a broken relationship.
In all, Lasso of truth is a good album and one that you should go out and buy.
