The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), is expected to meet with the Senate today (Thursday) to review the Tax Reform Bills submitted by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly.
The bills have sparked widespread controversy, with significant pushback from northern stakeholders.
In response, President Tinubu called for calm and directed the AGF to engage with the National Assembly to address contentious issues.
In line with this directive, the Senate established a special panel to discuss the bills with the AGF.
However, the meeting had faced delays due to adjustments in the panel’s composition and internal Senate caucus deliberations.
On Wednesday night, a source within the Ministry of Justice confirmed to reporters that the meeting would proceed today.
โThe AGF will be at the National Assembly tomorrow, December 19, for discussions on the tax reform bills,โ the official disclosed anonymously, as they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.
The Chairman of the Senate Special Committee, Senator Abba Moro, also confirmed that invitations had been sent to the AGF and the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji.
โThe committee has invited the Chairman of FIRS and the Honorable Attorney General and Minister of Justice,โ Moro stated briefly.
Two weeks ago, the Senate formed the committee, led by Moro, to collaborate with the AGF on resolving contentious aspects of the Tax Reform Bills.
The committee includes Senators Adamu Aliero (PDP, Kebbi Central), Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia North), Seriake Dickson (PDP, Bayelsa West), Titus Zam (APC, Benue South), Abdullahi Yahaya (PDP, Kebbi North), Adeola Olamilekan (APC, Ogun West), Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), Adetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos East), and Kaka Shehu, SAN (APC, Borno Central), who has since withdrawn from the committee.
