African Artists’ Foundation is proud to announce the inaugural edition of The Maker: New
Contemporaries, a bi-annual platform for emerging artists to present their portfolios to a wide art
public, providing exposure opportunities and an outlet for critical re?ection of contemporary
African art.
The Inaugural edition of The Maker: New Contemporaries will take place at the African Artists’
Foundation, 54 Raymond Njoku Street, Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria on 13 April 2013 at 12 Noon.
All New Contemporaries are ?nal year students, recent graduates or self taught artists who are
increasingly standing out as rising stars of the Nigerian arts scene. Each participant will have a
maximum of 10 minutes to present their work via projection to a diverse audience of artists,
curators, critics, patrons and the press. This platform seeks to engage an emerging generation of
artists at the beginning of their careers with the aim of giving them the direction and network to
expand their practice. This event is free and open to the public.
The seven New Contemporaries are: Tyna Adebowale, Aderemi Adegbite, Ike Gerald Chiemezie,
Chinenye Emelogu, Adeniran Faustin, Obinna Makata, and Pwavidon Mathias.
Tyna Adebowale is a painter who focuses on the subtle representation of the female form in her
series of silhouette collages and textual paintings. Aderemi Adegbite is a social activist and
photojournalist who explores under-represented sectors of Nigerian society. Ike Gerald Chiemezie
is a mixed media installation artist who bases his experimentations on Albert Einstein’s Theory of
Relativity and a combination of non-traditional materials. Chinenye Emelogu, winner of the 2013
National Art Competition, seeks to further showcase her dexterity in the art of pottery.
Adeniran Faustin is a self-taught artist who has made extensive research and experimentation into a
sculptural practice using coloured sand. Obinna Makata is a trained sculptor who has more
recently created collages using African fabrics, pen drawings, and ?uid elongated forms. Pwavidon
Mathias portrays highly detailed engravings made on scratch paper through which he tells folktales
from his native village in Adamawa State, Nigeria.
