President Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo have announced a salary slash. According to Presidential spokesman, Mallam Shehu Garba revealed that the President had decided to slash his salary by 50%.
The Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission pegs the President’s salary at N14,058,820.00 per annum. However, with Buhari’s new move, this figure will now be in the region of 7 million Naira annually.
According to Shehu, the decision has been communicated to the Office of the Secretary General of the Federation. It is important to note that one of the biggest issues in Nigeria over the years is the large salaries and allowances which public officials earn.
In a country where most states cannot even afford to pay the official minimum wage, public officials earn millions in salaries and even more unknown millions in allowances.
