Three Al- Jazeera journalists, Baher Mohamed, Peter Greste as well as the news channel’s bureau chief Mohamed Fahmy were arrested in Egypt over a year ago on trumped up charges of conspiring with the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.
After an untiring campaign by Al Jazeera to secure the release of its journalists, two days ago, Egyptian authorities finally released Peter Greste who had spent 400 days in detention. Al Jazeera continues to insist that it will not stop its campaign until all three men are released.
In what can be classified as cheerful new, reports out of Egypt claim that Bureau chief Mohamed Fahmy could be released today. Fahmy, who developed a shoulder condition while in detention, is said to have been forced his Egyptian citizenship as a condition for his release.
It is speculated that he could very well be released before the end of the week. The fate of the third journalist Baher Mohamed still seems to hang in the balance
