A new year’s day celebration in Shanghai, China, went awry when a stampeded left 36 people dead. A large crowd had gathered at the Chen Yi Square to watch a laser show.

No one seems to know what caused the stampede but there’s speculation that a few people heard a loud sound and people started to panic. 36 people died in the stampede as another 47 were said to have been injured.

The New Year’s eve celebration at the Chen Yi square is an annual event which usually attracts large crowds and people are criticizing authorities for not being fully prepared to deal with such a large number of people.
