It was so fulfilling and exciting to see the smiles and joy on the faces of thousands of children across several remote riverine communities and urban slums as they all received very lovely gifts and met a very special Santa Claus, Alibaba for the first time.
Every year, passionate Slum2School Volunteers go on a community tour with gift boxes for underprivileged children who live in hard to reach communities and this year it was even bigger as about 3000 children from 10 remote communities and urban slums where thrilled as they all got gift boxes which contained amazing items including, toys including LEGO, games, clothes, shoes, provisions and educational materials.
The gift boxes were all donated by Slum2School Volunteers, individuals, corporate organizations and schools from various parts of Nigeria and the diaspora.
The project which is tagged ChristmasInABOX is always focused on giving every individual an opportunity to give a child gifts well wrapped in a box.
In the stretch of 3days, over 10 communities within Epe Islands, Bariga, Ajegunle, Iwaya, Adekunle, etc and the final day at Makoko were visited. A few organizations and schools like Sahara group, Corona schools, also participated in the tour.
In many cases, volunteers had to take boats and travel for hours by water and road to reach some of the children who least expected to receive such amount of love.
Slum2School Africa is one of Africa’s most vibrant volunteer driven development organization and they have series of activities geared towards promoting education, providing scholarships and psychosocial support for underprivileged children. Speaking about the impact of the ChristmasInABOX project at the grand finale in Makoko community, the founder of Slum2School, Otto Orondaam said the vision is to ensure that there is so much love in the society where the gap between the rich and the poor is reduced and every individual makes a personal commitment to improve the lives of others.
A volunteer, Arinze Igweonu also spoke excitedly about the turnout of volunteers and gift boxes this year and appreciated Alibaba for taking part in the tour amidst his busy schedule saying next year it will be bigger and that they are looking forward to a nationwide tour.
