I was born in the early 90’s and did not get the chance to witness the 1976 coup. I have always wanted to know what actually happened, though we were told in school and I had the opportunity to visit the National museum in Lagos where the car was parked. This was not enough to determine what really happened and so when I had about the 76 movie the urge to see movie was serious owing to the fact that I wanted to relive the experience as such. I was eager to see what the movie was about which was directed by Izu Ojukwu.
The story is told from two points of view from a young pregnant woman (Rita Dominic), and that of her husband who is a solider (Ramsey Noah). He was accused of been involved in the 1976 military coup and assassination of General Murtala Mohammed, the Head of State (Nigeria). If you were aware of the 1976 coup this a movie to watch for some insight as to the coup. I guess that is why it was listed among the movies for TIFF.
The introduction of the movie was super cool, no wasting of time on the cast and we had the first picture take us back to 1976.The pregnancy Rita Dominic was carrying looked so heavy and real. One should not expect less from the International and professional actress, she did justice to her script without any mistake at all. She understood the place of a soldier’s wife and she played the role perfectly well. I understand the technicality of this movie and how much they need to get done to achieve a good result. I must commend the director of the movie for doing a wonderful job. The props and the language was well executed and I was really happy to see that they could get that done. The likes of Ramsey Noah, Chidi Mokeme and others gave the movie a professional touch with their characters. The fusion of old scenes they must have gotten from the museum/archive and new scenes was simply phenomenal and I liked the sepia feel added to the new scenes. The director did a very good job with the props, cast and cinematography.
Overall this was a very nice movie and to me should be one of the top best movies this year. You all should watch it. A must watch!!
