In the 2023 edition of the MTV Europe Music Awards, a new category called ‘Best Afrobeats’ has been introduced. This category was included in the list of nominations for the 2023 MTV EMAs, which was publicly announced on Wednesday, September 4th.
The inaugural candidates for the ‘Best Afrobeats’ category include prominent artists like Davido, Rema, Burna Boy, Asake, Ayra Starr, and the French sensation Aya Nakamura. Rema’s collaborative hit track ‘Calm Down’ with American artist Selena Gomez received nominations in the ‘Best Song’ and ‘Best Collaboration’ categories.
Additionally, Burna Boy received a nomination for ‘Best Live Performer,’ competing alongside Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd (who is now going by his birth name, Abel Tesfaye), and others.
The 2023 MTV EMAs are scheduled to take place on November 5, 2023, in Paris, France, and will be broadcast live to more than 150 countries.
