Pope Francis will undergo intestinal surgery caused by an abdominal hernia and will remain in the hospital for several days to recover.
“At the end of the General Audience, the Holy Father went to the A. Gemelli University Hospital where he will undergo a surgical operation of laparotomy and plastic surgery of the abdominal wall with prostheses under general anesthesia,” the Vatican said in a statement.
The 86-year-old Pope will be at the hospital for several days to allow for the normal postoperative course and full functional recovery.
“Pope Francis is touched by the many messages received and expresses his gratitude for the closeness and prayer.” The Vatican spokesperson added.
