The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended five individuals associated with the Yoruba Nation movement following their alleged attempt to take over a government-owned radio station in the capital city of Ibadan.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening when the separatists stormed the premises of Radio Nigeria, Amuludun 99.1FM. The suspects, identified as Noah Atoyebi (30), Gbenga Adeleke (25), Abdulganiyu Kolawole (35), Bashiru Kehinde O. (gender undisclosed), and Fajola Elija (45), reportedly gained control of the studio and made a broadcast declaring the establishment of a Yoruba nation.
Frightened station staff members sought refuge as the attackers allegedly employed charms during their assault.
The Oyo State Police Command, through Commissioner Adebowale Williams, issued a statement reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding lives and property, as well as maintaining law and order. The statement particularly emphasized the upcoming inauguration ceremony for elected officials on May 29, 2023.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the radio station personnel.
Commissioner Williams revealed that an investigation team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, has been tasked with uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident and apprehending additional suspects. The police are conducting an intelligence-driven inquiry to dismantle the network involved in the attack.
The police condemned the act as criminal, unpatriotic, and a clear case of terrorism. They emphasized that appropriate legal sanctions would be applied. The Commissioner assured the citizens of the state that security measures have been enhanced, not only for the forthcoming inauguration ceremony but also for the future, in collaboration with other relevant security agencies.
Prof Banji Akintoye, the leader of the Yoruba Nation Self-Determination Struggle, has disowned the perpetrators and condemned the invasion of the radio station. In a statement issued by his Assistant Director of Programs, Olatunde Amusat, Akintoye described the group’s actions as lawless and profoundly criminal. He emphasized that his organization has no affiliation with the group and bears no responsibility for their criminal behavior.
