Sources indicate that the US delegation, led by Mr. Jim Suor, the regional security officer of the US Consulate in Lagos, expressed their appreciation to the naval personnel for their swift response in rescuing the abducted embassy staff members in Ogbaru.

According to an insider familiar with the visit, “The US delegation paid a courtesy visit to Navy Captain G. Osuobeni, the Commander of the base, on Saturday, May 20, 2023, to acknowledge the efforts of the Nigerian Navy in responding to the distress call and successfully rescuing the kidnapped embassy staff.”

During the visit, the head of the US team expressed gratitude on behalf of the US Government for the unwavering dedication of the security agencies in Anambra State, with a special mention of the commendable efforts and support provided by the Nigerian Navy.

The attack on the US convoy had raised concerns about the safety of foreign officials operating in the region. However, the prompt and decisive action taken by the Nigerian Navy to rescue the abducted embassy personnel has been widely praised and has helped allay fears regarding the security situation.

The US Embassy’s visit to the Naval Base in Onitsha serves as a testament to the strong bilateral relationship between Nigeria and the United States. It further emphasizes the significance of collaboration and mutual support in combating security challenges and ensuring the safety of diplomatic missions within the country.

Both the Nigerian Navy and the United States Embassy are expected to continue working closely together to enhance security measures and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The visit stands as a symbol of solidarity and shared commitment in upholding peace and stability in the region.
