Lagos, Nigeria – Renowned Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti turned himself in to the Lagos State Police Command on Monday morning to face investigation regarding an alleged assault on a police officer. Accompanied by his lawyer and a family member, Seun presented himself at the State Criminal Investigation Department in the Panti area of the state.
According to Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the police command, Seun’s surrender follows a recent video capturing the musician assaulting a police officer. The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Seun Kuti in response to the incident.
Hundeyin further explained that once the investigation is completed, the police will proceed with prosecuting the singer if there are reasonable grounds to do so. The force spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the Inspector-General of Police has ordered a prompt and thorough investigation into the assault, emphasizing that acts of contempt or disdain for symbols of authority will not be tolerated.
Seun Kuti, the youngest son of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, has gained international recognition for his music and activism. However, this recent incident has put him in the midst of a legal battle. The musician, known for his socio-political commentary, is expected to cooperate with authorities during the investigation process.
