Reports indicate that suspected thugs wearing masks carried out attacks on polling units in ward D, Igando/Ikotun area of Lagos state during the governorship and state assembly elections on Saturday.
Voter apathy was prevalent in some parts of the country, and violence was observed in Lagos and other states. The thugs, armed with sticks and knives, reportedly chased away voters from polling units in the Ijegun community school and rode on motorcycles to attack other voting areas. Some voters had to jump over the school fence to escape. Polling units 096, 116, 281, 094, 095, and 084 were affected.
At another polling unit located at Awonisi Gate on Ijegamo road, the thugs beat up a lady and seized her phone and ATM cards. A man who attempted to challenge them was also beaten and injured. Despite being accredited, most voters reportedly left the polling areas and did not return.
The police operatives posted to the polling area were reportedly unable to control the situation, and a patrol team arrived later. One of the officers on the patrol team expressed disappointment at being called after the crisis had already died down.
