ECOWAS declares peaceful satisfaction with election

According to a statement released by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections that took place on Saturday, March 18, 2023, were conducted to their satisfaction.

The statement, which was made available to the correspondent, revealed that the electoral process was peaceful and all stakeholders, including INEC officials, party agents, and voters, expressed satisfaction with the process.

The ECOWAS Election Observation Mission, which was deployed by the President of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States, His Excellency Dr Omar TOURAY, has been monitoring the Gubernatorial and State Assembly Elections in Nigeria. Out of the 36 states, 28 states had 837 candidates vying for the position of governors, while the State Houses of Assembly Elections held in 36 states except FCT, Abuja had 10,240 candidates vying for 993 State Assembly seats.

The statement further disclosed that 163 observers were deployed by ECOWAS, drawn from the Community Institutions, West African Ambassadors accredited to ECOWAS, Member States’ Electoral Commissions and Ministries of Foreign Affairs, and electoral experts from civil society. It also included a thirteen-member Core Team of electoral experts that has been in the country prior to the presidential and national assembly elections.
