The APC campaign council has criticized former President Olusegun Obasanjo for calling for the cancellation of allegedly manipulated polls.
Obasanjo had advised President Muhammadu Buhari to address the tensions following allegations of discrepancies in election results and suggested that in areas affected by compromise, the elections should be cancelled and redone.
The spokesperson of the APC campaign council, Dele Alake, accused Obasanjo of “hypocrisy” and “mischief” in a statement, stating that “what Obasanjo is subtly calling for in his nefarious statement is a coup against democracy and the constitution.”
The statement further expressed disappointment that a former President who ought to be a statesman would seek to endanger and derail the democratic process for selfish and malicious reasons. It also noted that Obasanjo was not an impartial and disinterested party as far as the election was concerned, having endorsed the candidacy of Mr Peter Obi.
The statement also questioned Obasanjo’s credibility in querying the outcome of the elections in other places, given that he had endorsed Obi’s candidacy and that Obi had even been defeated in Obasanjo’s own polling unit in Abeokuta, Ogun State. It accused Obasanjo of wanting President Buhari to intervene in an undemocratic manner to truncate the ongoing political process.
